wheel in the sky

ArtPrize 2012 Competition Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, Grand Rapids

The experience of creating "Wheel In The Sky" has been a childhood revival of sorts. As an artist, I am intrigued by the blending of art and science. I felt challenged to rejuvenate an enduring public obsession with kaleidoscopes. This interactive sculpture is designed to be hand turned, and enjoyed with family and friends. In theory, Wheel In The Sky is art as an instrument for an expansive experience. Conceptually, this kinetic industrial rendition is made for interactive expressionism. Constructed of raw metal alloys, and mixed substrates, the Wheel In The Sky sculpture is stylized with a myriad of embellishing details. The alluring, dynamic mandala forms when turning the hand wheel that rotates the object cylinder filled with translucent celestial charms refracting through and into the view port. Ambient light transformation, polarization, and refraction create an optical theater-setting the stage for a phenomenal, continual fractal show of shifting patterns and colors.

    Unbranded

ArtPrize 2011 Competition Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids

My project, "Unbranded", consists of a multitude of cohesive dynamic designs for sculpture each with designated subtitles, in a multitude of mediums, both in single and group figural compositions. “Laboratory of Awareness” is an appropriation for public display with a conceptually strong message and representational of social futurism. This panel sculpture was inspired by observing social changes of human roles over time and the consequential resulting diversity in postmodern society. My composition narrates the cerebral investigation and navigation, through and across, the multiples of diversity and cultural boundaries. “Laboratory of Awareness” in theory is an instrument of expression to communicate and provoke thought and public awareness. Specifically to bring acceptance, and to embrace differences while promoting a positive and higher quality of life and community.
